Facebook Gives Users in India More Control Over Their Profile Pictures

Facebook has announced that it is piloting new tools that will give people in India more control over who can download and share their profile pictures.

“In India, we’ve heard that people want more control over their profile pictures, and we’ve been working over the past year to understand how we can help,” wrote Aarati Soman, Product Manager at Facebook on Wednesday.

In addition, the company is exploring ways people could more easily add designs to profile pictures, which Facebook research has shown helpful in deterring misuse.

Based on what it learns from the experience in India, the social media giant hopes to expand the feature to other countries soon.

“In our research with people and safety organisations in India, we have heard that some women choose not to share profile pictures that include their faces anywhere on the internet because they are concerned about what may happen to their photos,” she added.

These tools, developed in partnership with Indian safety organisations like Centre for Social Research, Learning Links Foundation, Breakthrough and Youth Ki Awaaz are designed to give people more control over their experience and help keep them safe online.

From now on, people in India would start seeing a step-by-step guide to add an optional profile picture guard.

“Other people will no longer be able to download, share or send your profile picture in a message on Facebook. People you are not friends with on Facebook won’t be able to tag anyone, including themselves, in your profile picture,” Soman clarified.

Where possible, Facebook would prevent others from taking a screenshot of a profile picture on Facebook – the feature currently available only on Android devices.

The company would also display a blue border and shield around profile picture as a visual cue of protection deterring misuse.

Facebook also partnered with Jessica Singh, an illustrator who took inspiration from traditional Indian textile designs such as bandhni and kantha, to create designs for people to add to their profile picture.

OnePlus 5 camera
Let’s start with the dual rear camera setup. The OnePlus 5 is claimed to sport what OnePlus calls the “highest resolution dual-camera system on a smartphone today”. This is made up of a 16-megapixel main camera (Sony IMX398 sensor, 1.12-micron pixels) with an f/1.7 aperture, said to capture 34 percent more light than the OnePlus 3T (which had an aperture of f/2.0), coupled with a 20-megapixel telephoto camera (Sony IMX350 sensor, 1-micron pixels) with an f/2.6 aperture.

The company is also boasting of Fast AF, which gives the OnePlus 5 faster autofocus, said to be 40 percent speedier than the OnePlus 3T. The rear camera setup features a dual-LED flash module and boasts of 4K video recording with EIS. The dual camera setup, apart from Bokeh effects, also delivers optical zoom up to 2x, and bumped up to 8x using a multi-frame software algorithm. OnePlus 5 features
Getting to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC used on the OnePlus 5, the company reveals the octa-core processor has a maximum clock speed of 2.45GHz, and claims that the coupled Adreno 540 GPU offers up to 25 percent more graphical performance.

With the launch of the OnePlus 5, the company has joined the elite ranks of manufacturers offering smartphone with 8GB of RAM. Till date, only the Asus ZenFone AR holds that distinction. OnePlus is offering the smartphone in two memory and storage variants – 6GB RAM/ 64GB inbuilt storage and 8GB RAM/ 128GB inbuilt storage.

The OnePlus 5 sports LPDDR4X RAM, which OnePlus claims is 17 percent more power efficient than the previous LPDDR4 offering. Also being touted alongside is a feature called App Priority, which learns the apps users utilise most commonly to load them on startup. Apps that aren’t commonly used are deprioritised. Another performance improvement is the use of UFS 2.1 storage and a 2-lane ROM, which together are said to double bandwidth.

The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T were both plagued by touch latency issues, and OnePlus claims to have solved the issue on the OnePlus 5 by using high-speed cameras that track the movement of the screen and input speeds. The OnePlus 5 sports a slightly smaller 3300mAh battery compared to the OnePlus 3T’s 3400mAh offering, however, with “hardware and software optimisations” manages to deliver 20 percent more battery life than its predecessor. The company carries forward the ceramic fingerprint sensor on the OnePlus 3T to the OnePlus 5, with the same boast of unlocking in 0.2 seconds. The company is also calling the OnePlus 5 a “true world phone”, with support for 34 GSM network bands.

Finally, OxygenOS on the OnePlus 5 gets some new features including Reading Mode, Expanded Screenshots, and a semi-transparent app drawer.

OnePlus 5 design
Let’s now get to the design aspect of the OnePlus 5. The smartphone is built out of anodised aluminium and does indeed look like the iPhone 7 Plus, with the primary difference being the shape of the Home Button. OnePlus has even mimicked the antenna lines of the iPhone 7 Plus. The company is boasting of the slimness of the OnePlus 5, calling it the “slimmest OnePlus flagship ever” at 7.25mm.

The smartphone also sports more rounded corners compared to previous offerings, and also features the iPhone 7 Plus-like crescent-shaped antenna lines on the top and bottom.

OnePlus 5 will be available in two colour variants – Midnight Black and Slate Grey. It retains the single speaker as well as the 3.5mm audio jack on the bottom panel. Other features carried on from previous generations of OnePlus smartphones include hardware capacitive keys (with the option of onscreen navigation) and the Alert Slider.

Pokemon Go Update to Add Raid Battles, New Gym Features, Items, and More

Pokemon Go’s latest update is set to add raid battles, new gym features, and a slew of new items among other things.

According to game developer Niantic, several changes are coming to Pokemon Go. The biggest addition is the new Raid Battle feature – it’s a cooperative game mode that has users working together to defeat a powerful Pokemon known as a Raid Boss. It’s not too dissimilar to what we’ve seen in massively multiplayer online role-playing games like World of Warcraft or shared world shooters like Destiny and its sequel Destiny 2. Don’t expect it additional tries in a day to be free though.

“Before you can battle the Raid Boss, you’ll need a Raid Pass. You can get one free Raid Pass per day by visiting a Gym, but you can only hold one at a time. You can also get Premium Raid Passes from the in-game shop,” explains Niantic in a post. “Upon using your pass to join the battle, you and up to 20 other Trainers work together to defeat the Raid Boss. If you successfully defeat the Raid Boss within the five-minute time limit, you’ll have the chance to catch an extra powerful Pokemon of your own.”

Pokemon Go Update to Add Raid Battles, New Gym Features, Items, and More

Defeating a Raid Boss nets players unique items like Rare Candies which when used on a Pokemon turns into that Pokemon’s Candy, Golden Razz Berries which let Pokemon assigned to a Gym recover its motivation meter or increase the chance of catching Pokemon in the wild, and Technical Machines that will teach Pokemon a new Fast or Charged Attack.

Also new is how Gyms work in Pokemon Go. Item acquisition will be possible by spinning the Photo Disc and accessing Gym-based features and content won’t be dependent on Prestige and training. Rather they feature six permanent slots that can be filed by the controlling team’s Pokemon and each Pokemon should be unique. Opposing teams will battle Pokemon in the order they were assigned. Furthermore, the company shed light on the game’s new motivation system.

“At the heart of the update is a new motivation system that will significantly change how you interact with Gyms. When a Pokemon is assigned to a Gym, a motivation meter will be displayed. Pokemon assigned to defend a Gym lose motivation over time and as they are defeated in battle. As a Pokemon loses motivation, its CP will temporarily decrease, making it easier for opposing teams to defeat. To help keep the Pokemon motivated and in tip-top shape for their next battle, Trainers can treat their team’s Pokemon to some Berries, which restore their motivation. If a Pokemon loses all motivation, it will leave the Gym and return to its Trainer the next time it loses a battle, so you’ll want to keep your team’s Pokemon motivated by giving them Berries frequently.”

This isn’t all. Interacting with Gyms earns players Gym Badges which players can level up by battling other Pokemon Trainers, giving berries to Pokemon in Gyms, and spinning a Gym’s Photo Disc.

In order for these sweeping changes to come into motion Gyms will be temporary disabled and will return when the update has been rolled out the world over. This will be followed by the Raid Battles added to the game over the next few weeks, first in beta to a small set of players and then via invites to a larger group, gradually expanding to Gyms worldwide.
